Honouring Heather White’s 42-year legacy of compassion and care for animals, children and the community - Honouring Heather White’s 42-year legacy of compassion and care for animals, children and the communityThe Oakville & Milton Humane Society (OMHS) is pleased to announce the establishment of the Heather White Legacy Bursary, a tribute to Heather White as she embarks on a well-deserved retirement after an extraordinary 42 years of service to OMHS.

Created in honour of Heather’s pioneering leadership to OMHS, animals and the community, the bursary will provide three children with the opportunity to attend OMHS’ renowned children’s camps who may not have the means to afford the fees, ensuring access to our valued programs.

At a time when most shelters primarily focused on animal protective services, including rescuing injured, sick, and abused animals, White used her passion for animals, education, and community engagement to pioneer an innovative education program. Through this program, OMHS staff share their expertise, fostering compassion and raising awareness regarding animal care and welfare issues within our community, reaching many thousands of people since their inception.

OMHS camps were created by White in the 1990s so children could learn about animals and contribute to OMHS’ mission of promoting the humane treatment and protection of animals in our community.

“The Heather White Legacy Bursary is a testament to Heather’s inspiring dedication and unwavering commitment to the well-being of animals and to building children’s capacity for kindness,” Jeff Vallentin, executive director of the Oakville & Milton Humane Society.

“Heather’s vast knowledge and tireless efforts have left an indelible mark on our community and have resulted in positive changes for the welfare of animals and those who have had the pleasure of working with her,” said Vallentin.

White credits listening to feedback from the community and having the support of a network of staff, donors, sponsors, and volunteers instrumental to the program’s success.

“Through education and outreach, we have come to understand that by empowering individuals we can all work together towards a common mission,” said White.

When completing a tour or school visit, White shares these words:

“Now, you are a member of the OMHS family. Part of your role is to be compassionate towards animals and if you see an animal in trouble, you can help us help that animal. Together, we can make a significant impact on the lives of animals.”

The education program has grown to include summer and day camps, and kindness and leadership programs for children and youth. OMHS’ summer camp’s immense popularity continues more than 30 years later, with all eight weeks of summer 2024 camps selling out in just two hours.

“Heather is forever part of the OMHS family. By supporting children in our community, the Heather White Legacy Bursary fosters the values that Heather has role-modeled for decades in the field of animal welfare and community leadership. Her legacy will continue at OMHS and in future generations to shape a more compassionate and empathetic society,” said Vallentin.
