June is Adopt-a-Cat Month, a time when animal shelters everywhere are full of kittens and cats looking for loving homes, and the Oakville & Milton Humane Society (OMHS) is no exception! Kitten season is in full swing, and the shelter is seeing an influx of kittens who need families to call their own.

If you’re thinking about adding a furry friend to your family, OMHS hopes that people will consider adoption from our shelter as their first option. When you adopt, you’re not just giving one cat a second chance—you’re also creating room in the shelter for another cat in need. In fact, adopting is like giving two animals the chance to find their forever home!

So far this year, OMHS has found homes for 108 cats and kittens, but there are still approximately 22 felines at the shelter waiting to find their forever families.

Adoption fees at OMHS cover so much more than just the cat. Your new pet will already be spayed or neutered, vaccinated, treated for parasites, microchipped, and will have received a wellness exam. To put that into perspective, the Ontario Veterinary Medical Association estimates that these treatments would cost approximately $2,000 if you paid out-of-pocket at the vet. Through the shelter, adoption fees are a fraction of that at just $425 for a kitten under six months old, or $605 for a pair of kittens. Older cats are just $300 or $400 for a bonded pair. Senior cats (eight years and up) are only $205.

OMHS currently has some long-term resident cats whose adoption fees are currently 50% off. These cats have been waiting patiently and are especially eager for a loving home. We also have a number of bonded pairs (cats who are best friends and need to stay together) available. When you adopt a bonded pair not only are you giving two cats a home, but you’re welcoming an instant pair who already have a special bond and bring twice the joy.

“We encourage everyone in our community to consider adopting a cat or kitten this month,” said Jeff Vallentin, Executive Director of OMHS. “While it might be obvious that adopting from a shelter is a great gift to an animal in need, it is also very true that your new adopted family member will be a gift to you. Your life may be fuller, richer, and better because of your choice.”
