Legacy and Planned Gifts

Thank you for considering a gift to help the animals and wildlife needing compassion and care

Your gift today will change the world for a deserving animal.

Your future gift can extend your compassion for animals beyond your lifetime.

You have the power to change the lives of animals into the future.

The most important first step is to consult with your Advisor(s) and then perhaps your family to let them know your wishes and celebrate your future, compassionate gift for those who can not speak for themselves.

Our Promise to you

Your gift has the power to change the world for an animal deserving a second chance at life. From domestic animals to wildlife and farm animals, we believe in caring, rescuing, and rehabilitating those who can not speak for themselves. You have the power to continue this work beyond your lifetime.

Happy Tails and Happy Reunions are made possible by both our team of dedicated staff and volunteers and our community of kind donors who help make this work possible.

There are a few ways to consider making your gift

Gift in Your Will

Residual Gift

You can leave a percentage of what is left of your estate or assets after other gifts (and debts) have been paid—known as a “residual gift.” If you have already drafted your Will, but want to add a residual gift to the animals at OMHS, your lawyer can help you do this without affecting the gifts you leave for your loved ones.

“To pay the Oakville & Milton Humane Society the residue (or share of the residue) of my estate for such use and purpose as the Board of Directors may determine in their absolute discretion.”

Specific Gift

You may wish to leave us a stated sum of money. This type of gift is known as a specific gift.

“To pay the Oakville & Milton Humane Society the sum of $— for such use and purpose as the Board of Directors may determine in their absolute discretion.”

Designated Gift

If you would like to designate your gift, please contact Lisa Ashby.

Gift of Publicly Traded Securities

Your gift of securities will make an immediate impact for the animals in our care. By donating publicly traded securities, you eliminate the capital gains tax that you’d have to pay if you sold the securities and then donated the proceeds. You’ll also receive a charitable tax receipt for your donation. You can give now, or as part of your estate and will planning process.

Your Advisor can transfer your securities by completing the transfer form. Please let us know the transfer is in process so we can facilitate as well as express our gratitude for your gift.

Donor Advised Funds

A donor advised fund held at a community foundation or banking institution may be an attractive alternative as you can have your own “foundation” without the administrative burden or large investment of a private foundation. You can name your fund in honour of your family’s philanthropic interests and choose annually where your gift will be directed. To learn more please contact your Advisor or Lisa Ashby.

Gifts of Life Insurance

Life insurance is another great way to support OMHS, there is a minimal investment up front.  You may not be able to make a significant gift now but it is a great way to leverage tax benefits to make a larger gift than you ever thought possible for the future animals needing our support.

You might be in one of these situations where life insurance might work for you:

  • Do you have an existing policy that you no longer need? Consider making Oakville & Milton Humane Society the beneficiary of the policy for tax savings in your Estate.
  • You can transfer the ownership to OMHS. You will get income tax receipts for the remaining premium payments.
  • Have a paid up policy? You can donate it and possibly get a larger income tax receipt to use right now.
  • Purchase a new policy and make OMHS the owner and beneficiary and receive a tax receipt for your premium payments.  The income tax refund you get will make the premiums cost much less.
  • Simply designate OMHS as a beneficiary of your policy.

Working with a life insurance broker can help you assess what policy is right for you taking into consideration your age, gender and general health.  Each option has different tax consequences and may make sense at different stages of life.

Other ways to give

Gifts of RSP/RRIF

At the time of your death your RRSP and RRIF are considered as income and taxed quite heavily. By designating OMHS as a beneficiary of your retirement funds you will receive a charitable tax receipt to offset any taxes owed. The gift would go directly to charity without being taxed or even needing to go through probate.

Gift of real-estate

You may wish to leave us a particular item, which can be sold to support our work to protect and care for animals. It could be property or an item of value, such as an antique or jewelry.

Please consider letting us know.

We want to thank you and ensure your gift and your intentions are understood and honoured. We can also provide the right wording, particularly if you are designating your gift to a specific area.

We understand that creating a gift in your Will is one of the most personally significant gift you can make and we will respect your wishes with regards to how much recognition or anonymity you would like. We will always respect your privacy and the decisions you make while creating your Will. Letting us know of your future gift is not legally binding in any way, but it does help the shelter plan when we know there is support into the future to continue investing in protecting animals.

If you decide to include the OMHS in your Will, our staff, volunteer and animals thank YOU!
